Dental Sealants
Overview
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These areas have deep grooves that are difficult to clean with brushing alone—making them prime spots for cavities, especially in children and teens.
Sealants act as a shield against food particles, bacteria, and plaque, dramatically lowering the risk of tooth decay. The procedure is fast, painless, and doesn’t require any drilling or numbing.
They’re especially effective for kids and teens, but adults with cavity-prone molars can benefit too.
Procedure Details
-
No special prep is needed—sealants are usually done right after a dental cleaning.
-
The tooth surface is cleaned and dried thoroughly.
A gentle etching solution is applied to slightly roughen the surface for better bonding.
The tooth is rinsed and dried again.
A thin layer of sealant is painted onto the tooth’s grooves.
A special blue curing light is used to harden the sealant in seconds.
-
You can eat and drink right away.
No downtime or sensitivity is expected.
