Periodontics
Overview
Periodontics focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease (also called periodontal disease)—a serious but often silent condition that affects nearly half of American adults.
Gum disease can cause swollen or bleeding gums, gum recession, bad breath, and eventually tooth loss if left untreated. But the good news? It’s entirely preventable—and treatable. At Village Dental, we offer both early interventions and advanced therapies to restore your gum health and protect your smile for the long run.
Whether you need a deep cleaning or a more involved procedure, we’re here to help you heal, comfortably and confidently.
Protecting the foundation of your smile—because healthy gums mean a healthier you.
Procedure Details
-
We’ll perform a comprehensive periodontal exam to measure gum pocket depths and evaluate bone health.
You may need a full set of x-rays to assess the extent of the infection below the gumline.
Let us know if you’ve noticed bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, or gum sensitivity.
-
Treatment depends on the stage of gum disease. Common approaches include:
Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning): Plaque and tartar are gently removed from below the gumline, and tooth roots are smoothed to help gums reattach.
Antibacterial Therapy: In some cases, localized antibiotics are applied directly to infected pockets.
Periodontal Maintenance: For ongoing care, cleanings may be scheduled every 3–4 months instead of twice a year.
Surgical Options: In advanced cases, referral to a periodontist for flap surgery or gum grafting may be necessary.
-
Mild soreness or gum tenderness is common for 1–2 days.
You may be prescribed a medicated rinse or antibiotics to aid healing.
We’ll schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress and help you maintain results.
